And so it begins

Yes folks the games have begun. As the match began I was in complete turmoil, imagine Gayle hitting a century!! I was beside myself. This is the man who I staunchly stood by in the spring only to be disappointed time and time again! And here he is smacking over a 100?!? I'm a little bitter. But, South Africa was not to be shut down and came back with their own impressive hitting to take the game 208 for 2. All in all Gayle's impressive points were followed closely by Gibbs who I am sure Paul is currently praising! Cheers to Paul for hanging onto his first place title with a wise captain choice. Michael just got home and said, "your mom sucks, she just seems to pick the right players somehow." So cheers to Missy for throwing her skills in Michaels face. Don't get to worried folks cause there are many more games to go.

I also want to send words of encouragement to Anna, I think you must have an inside man cause your team looks good. When England plays on Thursday you should really see some points.

Welcome to the new players, may the journey be exciting!

Tomorrow is a triple play with Kenya taking on New Zealand, Pakistan facing Scotland, and Australia making an appearance against Zimbabwe.

And here is the new worm. Click on it to see the big version.

How many of you are able to watch the games? I didn't even go to the shops for bread and milk - just rushed home and watched the whole thing. It was very exciting and the atmosphere was electric although I could have done without the drum beating and the dancing girls! This is supposed to be a very sedate and elegant game! A hearty clap and a 'well done chaps' at the correct times is all that is required. Well done to those on top but, as Michael says, there is a long way to go.

This could turn out to be no fun at all. Katy said we should make our teams public. I had no idea what this did to my role in the game but I did it anyway. I have now received some stinging criticism about my team selection, something about having too many high Bowlers and not enough Batters. I’m not sure what a Bowler is or why I shouldn’t have high ones but if making the team public subjects one to such violent rebuffs I wonder about the wisdom of going public. Would anyone like to help me with the concept of high and low Bowlers and Batters.

Yessssssss!!!!! As you say, Cath, last night's game was so reminiscent of the kind of smacking around of the ball that Graeme Pollock did when we - and the world - were a lot younger.

I don't know about elegance, but one of the British commentators for last night's game said that whoever had first called cricket a gentleman's game must have been smoking his own socks, because it never has been. The commentator is a former England player.

Bob, this high and low batter/bowler has nothing to do with the game of cricket, only with this competition. The 'high' ones are the ones that are supposedly the better batters (don't say that too fast) or bowlers and therefore come with more points than the less experienced ones. So they make it really difficult to have a full team of high anythings because you aren't allowed that many points.

The crucial point in any of this is that, in cricket, there are no batters. Only batsmen. There are batters in baseball, not in cricket.

This is not a rebuff. Just some gentle assistance. If you don't know the subtleties, how can you beat either Missy or me?

Katy, that Gayle, he's just impossible. Pick someone else, like Brian Lara. You're bound to beat Missy and me that way...

As for all you young Americans trying to get to grips with one of the great mysteries of the world - cricket - enjoy. We're glad to have you with us on this roller-coaster.

Cheers!

Well, well, well! What a result for Zim. If England beats Aus on Friday team selections are going to change considerably. 'High batters' and enough 'batters' may not count. 'High batsmen' probably won't count either. The 'high batsmen' that I picked forgot what they were supposed to do.

Moira, your subtleties worked well earlier today. You do, however, have some strong competition I see. The next few days could be interesting with England,India and S Lanka coming into the competition.

Moira:
Thanks so much. I have all the little kids around the neighborhood trying to say “better batters or bowlers” twenty times with out a flub. I’ve offered a prize to the first to do it.

Are batsmen the same as our batters, they try to hit the ball? Is it a ball or called something else? Is a bowler like our pitchers and throw the ball? Most important, can the bowlers score points or should I get rid of them?

Katy and Michael have invited us over to watch the cricket match on Sunday. They want us "Americans" to better understand what we are picking men for.
Well done Paul for still being in first place. It's difficult to type those words but there is still a long way to go.
Moira, thanks for the vote of confidence. I hope I can keep up with all of you.

For those not in the know this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket gives a good primer on cricket.

And yes, the bowler can score points.
